Classes and Testing Centers Near You

While taking a preparation class is not required, it can help provide you with the knowledge and confidence you need for success. You can find in-person GED® classes in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and everywhere in between. These adult education courses are a great way to gain experience and individual support before taking the official GED® exam.

Online Classes

You can also work on your GED® online in Indiana. This is a helpful option for those with busy work or home lives. The courses are high quality and offer greater flexibility for incorporating study time into your schedule.

GED® Tests Online in Indiana

When you’re ready to take your GED, Indiana offers convenient online testing options. However, not everyone can take the exam online. Online Testing restrictions apply. Please visit your GED student portal for more information. Or, if you prefer, you can take the test in person at one of the multiple testing centers available across the state.

If you do qualify and plan to take the Indiana GED® online, you’ll need to complete the GED Ready® practice test before registering for the exam. If you choose a physical testing location, the GED® Ready practice test is not required prior to scheduling the exam.

FAQs for Earning a GED in Indiana

Top Policies

You are required to be 18 years old to take the GED® test in Indiana. If you are 16 or 17 years of age, you must have a completed exit form, along with a superintendent/principal/designee recommendation, on file. See  IC 22-4.1-18. Chapter 18. Indiana High School Equivalency Diploma Program.

In Indiana, the minimum age required to take the GED® test is 18. You can be 16 or 17 and take the GED® test if you have an exit form on file. This form must be on file with the testing center prior to testing. The exit form and the instructions are available here.

Once the form is completed, you may submit the form through any of the methods:

  1. Go to a local testing center to drop off your form.
    1. The testing center will either help you registered with GED and tell you how to schedule the test.
  2. If you would like to take the test from the comforts of your home, please have your school corporation send the exit form via email to mhibbard@dwd.in.gov.

You must provide a government ID and be a resident of Indiana for at least 30 days. If you have an out of state ID, you may demonstrate proof of residency through a lease agreement, utility, phone bill, or bank statement.

Some states allow people who don’t live there to take the GED® test and others don’t. You’ll need to check the residency requirement for the state that you’re interested to test in.

No, Indiana doesn’t require you to prepare for the GED® test in an adult education classroom.

For those testing in-person at a Testing Center: 

  • No, you’re not required to take the GED Ready® practice test before taking the official GED® test. 

For those testing on the Online Exam*: 

  • Yes, you are required to take the GED Ready® practice test before taking the official GED® test online.
