How to Get a GED® in Alabama

If you’re 18 or older, you don’t need to be an official resident of Alabama to take this test. You’re eligible if you’re not currently enrolled in high school or a graduate. If you are 16 or 17 years old, you must meet additional requirements, including the following:

  • Alabama residency
  • Permission from your local school district
  • Parental or guardian approval

The GED® test is available in a computer-based format at an official GED® test center for $144. Or you can take the test online from home for $144.

If you take the test in person at a testing center, you aren’t required to attend preparatory classes. However, remember that taking classes is the best way to prepare for the GED® test. If you choose to take the exam online, you must take the GED Ready® practice test beforehand. You’ll need to score “green,” meaning you’ll likely pass the real test.
