From GED Graduate to Future Professor: How Matt Smith Opened New Doors Through Education

For years, Matt Smith knew that not having a high school diploma limited his opportunities. Better jobs often seemed out of reach, leaving him with few options beyond food service work or helping family. While he believed in his abilities, he also knew that earning his GED could help him build the future he wanted.
By pursuing his GED, Matt saw an opportunity to prove not only his commitment to his future, but also to himself. He wanted to show family and friends that he was serious about success and determined to create a future with greater possibility.
Like many adult learners, he was nervous about going back into the world of academics, but he knew it was time to overcome those fears and give himself a chance. He credits his mother who was one of his biggest motivators - she paid for his GED services, and she believed in him. He knew he had to make the most of her investment in his future.
The moment he passed his final math exam was one he'll never forget. The accomplishment brought a sense of pride and excitement that he immediately wanted to share with the people in his life. More importantly, earning his GED transformed the way he viewed himself.
"I stand a little taller and have much more confidence in my day-to-day life," Matt said.
Today, Matt works in sanitation at H-E-B, Texas’s largest grocery chain, but he is already focused on the next chapter of his journey. He is currently enrolled at Western Governors University pursuing a bachelor's degree in elementary education. His long-term goal is to earn a doctorate in history and become a college professor.
Looking back, Matt says the greatest reward for earning his GED was knowing he had accomplished a milestone he once thought would be difficult. For anyone considering the GED but feeling uncertain, his message is: You may not realize what you're missing out on until you experience that feeling of reward for yourself.
With his GED complete and college already in progress, Matt is proving that it's possible to take the next step, no matter how long you've put your goals on hold.
