How GED Testing Service Uses AI to Build Confidence and Equity in Learning

The new AI-powered math tutor in the GED App is proving that when designed with empathy and purpose, technology can remove barriers, boost confidence, and drive measurable learning impact.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping education, but at GED Testing Service, we believe its greatest potential lies in access and equity. Technology should meet learners where they are, adapt to their needs, and help them move forward with confidence.

That belief is now coming to life in the GED App, which recently introduced a powerful new feature: an AI-powered math tutor that gives adult learners on the path to a high school equivalency diploma real-time, personalized help.

Meeting learners where they are

For many GED learners, returning to education can be daunting. Asking for help — especially with subjects like math — can feel intimidating. The GED AI tutor was built to change that experience.

Trained specifically to understand both the learner and the GED test, this AI model provides targeted explanations, step-by-step support, and multilingual guidance in over 250 languages. It’s available 24/7, making personalized learning more accessible than ever before — whether a learner is studying after a long shift, balancing family responsibilities, or learning in a language that isn’t their first.

As CT Turner, President of GED Testing Service, puts it, “AI becomes a shame remover. It gives learners the freedom to ask questions, make mistakes, and truly understand without fear or judgment.”

Early results show strong engagement

Since launching, thousands of learners have already used the AI tutor, and the results show just how naturally learners are embracing it:

  • 36.8% of learners who answered an in-app math question engaged with the AI tutor
  • 98% of those learners actively asked follow-up questions
  • Learners who engage with the AI tutor spend 2.4 times more time learning in the app than those who don’t

These insights demonstrate not only the tutor’s usability but also its role in building confidence and curiosity. For learners who may have once felt left behind, AI is opening doors to deeper understanding and, ultimately, opportunity.

Technology designed with empathy and purpose

At GED, our approach to AI is grounded in responsibility and human impact. The GED AI tutor isn’t about replacing instructors — it’s about extending their reach and supporting learners who may not have access to in-person help.

By leveraging large language model (LLM) technology, GED’s product team has created a learning tool that adapts to each learner’s pace and provides feedback in real time. But what truly sets it apart is its alignment with equity and inclusion — ensuring every learner, regardless of background or language, can receive the help they need to succeed.

Empowering learners at the heart of GED’s mission

The GED program has always been about the learner — empowering individuals to build skills that lead to success in work and in life. It’s a program designed to meet learners where they are and help them move toward a brighter future through education.

The introduction of AI in the GED App builds on that mission, using innovation to create a more equitable, confident, and connected learning experience for every student who’s ready to take the next step.
